Groupon, a coupon, a comped entrée, happy hour — here's what you tip on, with the one case where the rule flips.

The rule is short: tip on the full, pre-discount price — what the meal or service would have cost without the deal. Tips pay for service, and the service doesn't shrink when the price does. The one genuine exception is happy hour, covered below.
Groupon and Daily Deals
This is where servers get shorted most often. A voucher turns a $100 dinner into $60, and the tip gets calculated on $60. But the server brought out $100 worth of food and drinks and did $100 worth of work.
Figure out the full menu value, then tip 18–20% of that:
- $100 dinner, paid $60 with a Groupon → tip on $100 → $20 at 20%
- $80 of services, 30%-off promo → tip on $80 → $16 at 20%
Many restaurants that take Groupons now print the pre-discount total on the check on purpose, so the number to tip on is right in front of you. As a Yahoo Finance write-up on the topic puts it, tip "at least 20% on what the bill would be without the discount."
Coupons, Loyalty Credits, and Freebies
Same principle. A "$10 off $50" coupon, a free entrée from a loyalty app, a birthday dessert on the house — the kitchen made it and the server carried it. Tip as though you paid full price for everything that came to the table. A CouponCabin survey found about 26% of coupon-using adults tip on the discounted total — so it's common, but it's the thing servers complain about most with deal customers.
Comped Items and Problem Discounts
This one trips people up because it feels generous to tip on the lower number. It isn't. If a manager removes your overcooked steak, the server still took the order, delivered it, fielded the complaint, walked it back to the kitchen, and re-ran it — usually more effort than a smooth meal. Tip on the price the dish would have been. The comp is the restaurant apologising with its own money; it's not a discount you earned by getting worse service.
The Exception: Happy Hour
Happy-hour pricing is a real, posted menu — not a discount off a "true" price. The $6 well drink genuinely costs $6 between 4 and 6 p.m. So tip on what you were actually charged, at your normal percentage.
The nuance: the bartender pours the same drink at 5 p.m. as at 9 p.m. Plenty of regulars bump to a bit above 20%, or fall back to a flat $1–$2 per drink, so the person making the drinks isn't earning half as much just because of the clock. Our bartender tip calculator does the per-drink math.
Salons, Spas, and Other Services
