The delivery fee, service fee, and any "small order fee" you see at checkout? Those all go to DoorDash, not to the Dasher.

Because base pay is so low, your tip is what determines whether a Dasher accepts your order and how quickly it gets delivered. A $2 tip on a $20 order means the Dasher is making barely minimum wage after gas. A 20% tip ($4) on that same order means they're actually earning a decent rate for the trip.

DashPass and Tipping

DoorDash's DashPass subscription ($9.99/month) waives delivery fees on qualifying orders over $12 from participating restaurants. It's a great deal for frequent users — but it does not change how much you should tip your Dasher.

Here's the key point: your Dasher doesn't know whether you have DashPass, and it doesn't affect their pay from DoorDash. They still get the same base pay plus your tip. If you're saving $3-5 per order on delivery fees thanks to DashPass, that's money in your pocket — not a reason to reduce your Dasher's tip.

Some DashPass members mistakenly think "I'm already paying $10/month for the subscription, so I don't need to tip as much." That logic doesn't work — your subscription fee goes to DoorDash, not to the Dasher delivering your food. Keep your tip at 15-20% regardless of your DashPass status.

Tipping for Large DoorDash Orders

The Dasher may need to make multiple trips from their car to your door, and there's a higher risk of spills or missing items.

Here's how to tip for large orders:

• $60-$100: 20% is appropriate. The Dasher is handling a significant load.
• $100-$150: 20-22%. The order may require multiple trips and careful handling.
• $150+: 22-25% or a flat $30+ tip. The Dasher is essentially making a catering delivery for you.

If your order includes items that need to be kept hot or cold (like ice cream or frozen items), consider adding an extra $2-3 — the Dasher is taking on additional responsibility to keep everything at the right temperature.

No-Contact Delivery Tips

No-contact delivery became standard during the pandemic, and many customers continue to use it for convenience or safety. But here's the thing: no-contact delivery doesn't actually reduce the Dasher's work. They still drive to your location, find parking, navigate to your door, and wait for you to pick up the food (or carefully leave it in a safe spot).

In some cases, no-contact delivery is actually more work for the Dasher — they need to call or text you when they arrive, wait for you to come to the door, and sometimes deal with confused customers who don't understand the process. Tip the same amount you would for a hand-off delivery. The convenience is for you, not less work for them.

• Standard no-contact: Same tip as hand-off delivery (15-20%)
• Large order, no-contact: 20%+ — the Dasher still handles the heavy load
• Bad weather, no-contact: 20-25% — they're still driving in tough conditions

DoorDash Tipping Policy

DoorDash allows you to tip before or after delivery. You can add a tip at checkout, adjust it within 30 minutes of delivery, or add a tip later through your order history. The Dasher sees your pre-tip amount when deciding whether to accept your order — so a higher upfront tip can get your food delivered faster, especially during busy periods.

DoorDash has a "tip model" where 100% of your tip goes directly to the Dasher. DoorDash does not use tips to offset base pay (a practice that was controversial in the past but was changed in 2019). When to Tip More on DoorDash

• Rain, snow, ice, or extreme heat that makes driving dangerous
• Orders during peak hours (lunch rush 11:30am-1pm, dinner rush 6-8pm)
• Holidays and major events (Super Bowl, New Year's Eve) when demand is overwhelming
• Apartment buildings with complicated access (gated communities, high-rises with slow elevators)
• Large or heavy orders (catering trays, multi-gallon drinks, family-sized meals)
• Orders that arrive with special instructions requiring extra effort (gate codes, specific drop-off spots)
• Remote or hard-to-find addresses (rural locations, complex apartment complexes)

If your Dasher has to wait more than 5-10 minutes at the restaurant for your order to be ready, consider adding $1-2 to the tip — they're losing time they could spend on other deliveries.
