A grocery tip has to cover two jobs: the shop (30-60 minutes selecting and bagging) and the drive. Percentage mode gives you the familiar 15-20%; distance mode rebuilds Instacart's internal batch-pay formula so you can see what the platform itself thinks the run is worth.
How Much to Tip an Instacart Shopper
Instacart shoppers do more work than a food-delivery courier. Before any driving happens, the shopper walks the store for 30 to 60 minutes, hand-picks produce, weighs items, texts you about substitutions, waits in the checkout line, and loads everything into their own car. Then they drive it to you and often carry heavy bags to your door. Instacart pays a "batch payment" for this that frequently lands between $4 and $10, so your tip is usually the majority of what the shopper earns on an order.
- 15%: Small, light order, short distance, no substitutions
- 18-20%: Standard weekly grocery shop
- 20-25%: Large order, lots of produce to hand-select, frozen items, stairs, or a long drive
- $5 minimum: Any order, no exceptions — a full shop is never worth less than $5
Instacart's Own Tip Formula
The "distance" mode in the calculator above reconstructs the structure Instacart uses internally to value a batch, so you can tip at least what the platform thinks the work is worth:

The formula is a floor, not a target. On most real orders a straight 18-20% is more generous and is what shoppers hope for — use the formula to sanity-check that you're at least covering the shopper's costs on a big or far-out order.
Why the Default Tip Is Only 5%
Instacart set its default suggested tip to 5% in 2018, during the fallout from a policy that counted customer tips toward the guaranteed batch payment. The company changed the pay policy after public pressure, but the low default suggestion stuck. If you check out without changing it, your shopper receives a 5% tip for the entire shop-and-deliver job.
Shoppers can see the tip before accepting a batch, and many filter out low-tip orders, so a 5% tip can also mean your groceries sit unclaimed or go to a less experienced shopper. Raise the suggestion to 15-20% before you confirm the order.
Tip Baiting: Don't Do It
Instacart lets you lower or remove a tip for up to 24 hours after delivery. "Tip baiting" is placing a large tip to get your order picked up quickly, then cutting it to zero once the groceries arrive. It leaves the shopper having done a full shop for the $4-10 base pay, and it spiked during 2020 badly enough that Instacart added friction to the process.
The after-delivery window exists for legitimate reasons — increasing a tip for a shopper who tracked down a hard-to-find item, or reducing one after genuinely poor service (wrong items, melted frozen food, no communication about substitutions). Use it for that, not as a bait-and-switch.
When to Tip an Instacart Shopper More
- Cases of water, bags of pet food, cat litter, or other dead weight
- Lots of loose produce the shopper has to hand-select and weigh
- A long list with many substitution decisions and back-and-forth texts
- Frozen or refrigerated items in hot weather (the shopper is racing a clock)
- Delivery up multiple flights of stairs or to a hard-to-reach unit
- Bad weather, or a store far from your address
- Holidays and the days before a major storm, when stores are picked over and lines are long

No. The service fee (typically 5% of the order, minimum $2) goes to Instacart, not your shopper. The delivery fee also goes to Instacart. Your shopper is paid a batch payment by Instacart plus 100% of your tip — the tip is the majority of what they earn on most orders.
Can I change my Instacart tip after delivery?
Yes. Instacart lets you adjust the tip for up to 24 hours after delivery. This is longer than most delivery apps. If your shopper did a great job finding hard-to-get items or picking good produce, you can increase the tip afterward. Reducing a tip to zero after delivery for no reason is called 'tip baiting' and is widely considered abusive.
Should I tip more for a large grocery order?
Yes. A 60-item order takes much longer to shop, is heavier to haul, and often needs multiple trips from the car. For orders over $100 or with 40+ items, tip at least 20%. For orders over $200 or with cases of water, pet food, or lots of frozen goods, 20-25% or a flat $30+ is appropriate.
Do I tip on the pre-substitution total or the final total?
Tip on the final total you're charged after substitutions and out-of-stock adjustments. If items were refunded and your total dropped a lot, a percentage tip can end up low — in that case, tip closer to what you would have on the original order, since the shopper still did the full shop.
