Cookie Policy
Effective Date: July 2026
Short version
This calculator runs entirely in your browser. We store your dark mode preference and last-used tip percentage in local storage (not a tracking cookie) — that stays on your device and is never sent to us. We use Google Analytics to see which pages get used, but only after you accept it in the cookie banner; it's off by default. We don't currently run advertising.
What "Necessary" storage does today
- Theme preference — remembers whether you chose light or dark mode.
- Last tip percentage — remembers the tip % you used last time, so the calculator starts where you left off.
- Offline cache — the service worker caches pages and assets so the calculator keeps working without a connection.
- Cookie consent choice — remembers what you picked in the cookie banner, so we don't ask again every visit.
None of this requires consent under GDPR or ePrivacy rules — it's strictly necessary for the site to function the way you asked it to (e.g., staying in dark mode). We still let you see and control it below, because it's your device.
What "Advertising & Analytics" controls
This site uses Google Analytics (GA4) to understand which pages are
useful — page views, approximate location (country/city level), device type, and how
long people stay. It sets cookies (_ga, _ga_*) to distinguish
returning visitors from new ones.
This site is built for a US audience, where first-party analytics does
not require prior opt-in. Google Analytics is therefore on by default.
You can switch it off at any time using the "Cookie Preferences" link
in the footer, and if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal
we turn it off automatically before any data is collected (see below). Technically this
uses Google
Consent Mode — analytics_storage defaults to granted,
advertising storage stays denied, and an opt-out downgrades analytics to
denied on that and every future visit.
This same category also covers advertising (we don't run any today, but if we add Google AdSense in the future, it will respect whatever you already chose here — see our Privacy Policy for how we'll disclose that if it happens).

Google Fonts
Earlier versions of this site loaded fonts directly from Google's servers on every page view, which sends your IP address to Google before you've made any choice. We now self-host all fonts (Inter and JetBrains Mono) — nothing font-related is requested from Google anymore.
Managing your choice
Use the "Cookie Preferences" link in the footer of any page to open the settings panel and turn analytics on or off at any time. You can also clear your browser's local storage for this site through your browser settings, which resets everything described above to the defaults.
Global Privacy Control & Do Not Track
If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal (or the older Do Not Track header), we detect it automatically and turn Google Analytics off for you — overriding the on-by-default behaviour above. You can still open "Cookie Preferences" in the footer to turn it back on if you change your mind.
